Decision support systems assist people in making a decision or choosing a course of action in a nonroutine situation that requires judgment (Haubl and Trifts 2000; Kasper 1996). In online webstores, vendors can easily offer highly interactive types of decision support. These co-called interactive decision aids (IDA) “help consumers in making informed purchase decisions amidst the vast availability of online product offerings” (Wang and Benbasat 2009, p. 3). However, the application of IDA is not restricted to purchase decisions. They are general enough to be of use in any kind of choice task where alternatives are known.

Perceptual commensuration in decision tables

This paper calls attention to design features that could enhance the helpfulness of the decision table to decision makers trying to get a better intuitive grasp of the choices facing them. The experiments reported here show that the grey scale is more facilitative than the number scale for problem comprehension as measured by the identification of dominance and the identification of non-additivity, each of which requires a view of the decision problem that is sensitive to patterns across attributes. Additional design features that could enhance the decision makers’ grasp of the choices facing them are suggested for further research.

Background Patients with chronic kidney disease ( CKD ) are at high risk of myocardial infarction. Cardiac troponins are the biomarkers of choice for the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction ( AMI ) without ST ‐segment elevation ( NSTE ). In patients with CKD , troponin levels are often chronically elevated, which reduces their diagnostic utility when NSTE ‐ AMI is suspected. Multiple-attribute decision support system based on fuzzy logic for performance assessment

Abstract This paper deals with the problem of assessing the performance of a set of production units, simultaneously considering different kinds of information, yielded by a Data Envelopment Analysis, a qualitative data analysis and an expert assessment. The tool for integrating heterogeneous data is a model that applies fuzzy logic to decision support systems. The classical Markowitz approach to the portfolio selection problem (PSP) consists of selecting the portfolio that minimises the return variance for a given level of expected return. By solving the problem for different values of this expected return we obtain the Pareto efficient frontier, which is composed of non-dominated portfolios. The final user has to discriminate amongst these points by resorting to an external criterion in order to decide which portfolio to invest in. This paper gives a description and analysis of the use of ELECTRE III and IV decision aids in the context of choosing a solid waste management system in two different real applications in Finland. Both methods fit this context well in general, since the problem involves many criteria and many ‘decision makers’. The available data are imprecise, which also favours the use of outranking methods.
